What Developers Need to Know About SaaS Business

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Software engineers tend to focus on building a great product, with the expectation that “if you build it they will come”. The romantic narrative of a sole coder being just one idea away from a billion dollar startup is prevalent in how the media portrays the industry. Experience on the ground, in research, and discussion with investors shows that this idea is not the direct path that is expected for startups.

To build a successful SaaS startup, product engineering needs to be complemented with solid understanding of how that fits in the business context, its marketing, its sales, and its basic metrics.

In this presentation we will provide engineers with the basics concepts to assess a SaaS business, consider its business model, its profitability and growth path. We'll go over terms such as 'Runway', 'Churn', and 'ARR', explain what the difference between a 'Run Rate' and a 'Burn Rate', define ‘land and expand’, and more.
